There are security concerns in Augusta County Schools. One teacher is suggesting something many people carry everyday.

We've heard suggestions like having officers in every school and even allowing teachers to carry guns. One teacher who is in the classroom everyday suggests keeping mace on hand. She says it's extra protection that could save lives.

For middle school teacher Dale Fair, safety in the classroom is being talked about everyday.

"We're the ones in the schools. We're the ones that have the kids," said Fair.

School safety wasn't on the agenda at Thursday night's Augusta County School Board Meeting, but Fair brought it up.

Fair told the board, "I would like to propose, the possibility, of arming the teachers with something like mace."

When you think of mace, you think of something small and compact that you can put in your pocket and it goes about 10 feet, but this teacher is proposing something much bigger than that.

"Bear mace that can stop a bear from about 30 feet away with a big spray," said Fair.

Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bishop is working on a plan to make County schools safer. He wants to add resource officers to every school, but his next move depends on state lawmakers.

"We need the money to follow that to make sure the kids here in Augusta County are taken care of," said Bishop.

Fair's mace suggestion didn't get much fan fare at the meeting, but it's something he feels is another line of defense.

"You know the possibility of the schools having that among the teachers just in case somebody was coming through that door," said Fair.

At this point, mace is only a suggestion. The General Assembly will look at ways of funding school security when the new session starts Wednesday.
