ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- State police identify the victim in a deadly tractor crash on Tuesday as Loren Gabriel Showalter. The 16-year old was a passenger on a tractor that crashed into a car on Tuesday evening.
The crash happened at the intersection of West Dry River Road and Honey Run Road near Dayton at about 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
The tractor pulled in front of the car, according to state police. The operator of the tractor, identified as Wilson Ray Showalter, 18, has been cited for failure to yield right of way. He was later taken to Sentara RMH after the crash.
Two passengers, including the victim, were riding on the fenders of the tractor when it pulled in front of the car, hitting the passenger side of it. The other passenger on the tractor, a 17-year-old, was taken to the U.Va. Medical Center.
Two people were in the car. A 16-year old passenger was taken to the U.Va. Medical Center. State police weren't sure if the 18-year old driver was hurt.
State police didn't release any information on whether seat belts were worn. Alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the crash.
It's expected Loren will be laid to rest this week.
