WOODSTOCK, Va. (WHSV) -- Filing your taxes early can make a difference in how you pay for college as a couple months could keep you from paying out of pocket.
Sheena Watson, a tax preparer, said most people don't know the benefits of filing taxes early.
She said the IRS and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, are directly related.
FAFSA uses the same information that you put into your tax return forms.
Watson said filing early can help students get the money they need.
"Filing your taxes early also ensures that you have all the necessary information that goes into the FAFSA form. So that it's complete and ready for them to look at. Otherwise it can be put on hold or delayed waiting for that information," said Watson.
She said you also need to put gross income on the form and you can only find that in your tax return.
