HARRISONBURG (WHSV) -- Thieves are using tax returns to rob victims of hundreds of dollars.
These crooks steal peoples' identities and all they need is a social security number.
They then put it on a 1040 EZ form and that tax return check may never make it to your mailbox.
Six million Americans dealt with the problem in the first half of last year.
Maxine Magri, a local certified public accountant who has 25 years experience dealing with taxes, said it's a relatively new problem to watch out for that's turning lives upside down.
"It is very worrisome that someone can steal your identity, because when they do steal your identity, it is very unsettling, It also can make your life very miserable," explained Magri.
To keep this kind of scam from happening to you, take extra steps to keep your social security number secure.
To keep your money from being stolen, fill out your tax return as soon as possible, so the thieves can't beat you to it.
