HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- A torch run benefiting the Special Olympics continued on Thursday in the Valley.
The run started at about 8 a.m. at the Suntrust Bank in downtown Harrisonburg. The group will be running down Route 11, through Mount Crawford, Weyers Cave, Mount Sydney, Fort Defiance and ending in Verona.
Members of both the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and Harrisonburg Police Department were there. Officers have been carrying the torch through Virginia for 1,900 since the end of May.
Organizers said this support goes a long way.
'the police officers do a great job of raising money for us. They raised..since last June, $1.1 million which goes to us..to run programs for our athletes,,give them lots of opportunities to go and show what they can do," said Daniel Leake, the regional director of the Special Olympics.
This year, more than 2,000 officers will help get the torch to Richmond.
