HARRISONBURG - It's time for round three of Tom Dempsey's Toughest Meals in the Valley food challenges.
This stop is the Dank-U Sandwich Truck in Harrisonburg. It's outside of the Royal Gas Station on Port Republic Road.
The owner, CJ Friedman, is the man behind it all. His sandwiches are a hit with James Madison University students.
"I went to JMU and I always knew I wanted to start a business at JMU. Having been a student for four years, I sort of knew how to target the students here and make the exact type of food that they wanted," said Friedman.
Each sandwich is served in a pita pocket packed with all sorts of ingredients. This challenge involves eating three of the Dank's Steak and Cheese Sandwiches.
“It's a five oz. portion of thinly sliced sirloin. Sliced peppers, onions, banana peppers, two slices of American cheese. No one has tried this challenge yet, so if you can eat three, it'll be Tom Dempsey's Dank-u Steak and Cheese,” said Friedman.
After round one, I made sure to drink plenty of water. The weather didn't help, either, as it was a cold day outside.
Round two started to feel like a challenge. It was getting colder outside and the vast size of the sandwich was starting to make me full.
The cheese was making things difficult. Because it was melted, everything inside was sticking to it.
The steak was filling me up. I was officially sick. After about 15 minutes, the second one was down. I was now just one away.
I had made it three quarters of the way, but rather than risk bringing up all that I had eaten in the parking lot, I called it quits.
I was so close, yet so far. As CJ would let me write inside of the Dank-U Truck, I came, I saw and I lost.
