HARRISONBURG -- Tom Dempsey takes on his last challenge in the Toughest Meals of the Valley series.
This one is different from the others because it's not about size, it's about spice.
This challenge takes me to Billy Jack's Wings and Draft Shack where I'm going to try to eat chicken wings with the hottest pepper on the planet.
Billy Jack's in Harrisonburg specializes on two things – wings and beer. Aaron Ludwig, the owner, says it's a perfect fit for the city.
"We have chicken, we do sliders, we do a draft beer selection that rotates constantly. We try to keep the cool vibe of downtown going," said Ludwig.
The options for wings include the Devil Wings, which are made with ghost peppers. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it's the hottest pepper on earth.
"We have that in our sauce, along with 50 habaneros, habanero powder. You're pretty much having it at the hottest we've ever had it."
The Devil Wing Challenge involves me eating six Devil's Wings in six minutes and then having to wait six minutes before I can have water or milk.
I had to sign a waiver before I could take on the challenge. I also had to wear rubber gloves to protect my hands from the hot sauce.
These did not smell like normal wings. The smell was almost like a gas.
Aaron set the clock for six minutes and the challenge was on.
It took about ten seconds for my body to start feeling the heat. It was absolutely brutal. I tried to eat as much of the chicken as I could. My throat felt numb and I could barely feel my lips.
I was determined to win, but time was running against me. Around three minutes in, I was on my fourth wing. Two away from beating the challenge.
At one minute, I couldn't chew anymore. It was all over.
I lost every challenge. That's right, I didn't succeed in ANY of the five challenges on the Toughest Meals of the Valley.
