The tourism industry in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County might get a boost this year. That's because a new initiative called, "Battles on the Home Front" is getting underway.
The idea is to commemorate the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Stonewall Jacksons' Valley Campaign that happened 150 years ago. Wednesday, tourism officials met to put the finishing touches on their plans; that includes the roll out of new souvenirs like mugs and brochures.
The promotion is a series of events starting in April, and it's not just for history buffs.
"We want to engage the women and children. We want to engage all ages. That's why we titled the promotion battles on the home front because we tell all the different stories," said Director of Harrisonburg Tourism, Brenda Black.
These events will feature what life was like for people at home during the Civil War. The hope is the program will bring more visitors to the Valley.
