AUGUSTA COUNTY -- A trooper and driver involved in a runaway car chase, which happened on Interstate 81 earlier this week, spoke with WHSV.

Amy Guevara said she was driving to class on Tuesday and everything seemed normal, until her brakes stopped working.

"I was panicking. I was trying really hard not to freak out," said Guevara.

Guevara was in the car with Sean Wies, her friend. Frantically, she called 911.

"The car was ultimately gonna' have to crash into something. I had a full tank of gas and the emergency brake wasn't working."

Guevara did all she could to try and stop the car, but nothing was working. In a moment of desperation, the two decided to jump out of the car. Guevara and Wies only suffered cuts and bruises.

"I unclicked his seat belt and he unclicked mine and then he went out the door."

The car was going 40 mph at the time the two jumped out onto the interstate. That left a runaway car with no driver. It was up to Sgt. CJ Aikens with Virginia State Police to stop the car.

"I was praying the whole time. We don't train for abandoned vehicles driving down the interstate," said Sgt. Aikens.

Sgt. Aikens said when the car started going into the median, it was time to move.

"I was right there, so I didn't think of the consequences until right after."

After about a three mile run-away car chase, Sgt. Aikens stopped the car by ramming it multiple times into a guard rail. He suffered a mild concussion, but the chase could have been worse.

"Just sitting in the back of the ambulance and thinking 'Thank God it turned out the way it did.'"

On Thursday, Guevara got the chance to thank Sgt. Aikens for saving the day.

Sgt. Aikens has been on the force for 10 years. He said the car chase was "the oddest situation" he has ever experienced.
