WEYERS CAVE, Va –- Spencer Getz, an Iraq war veteran, spent years overseas and ended up at Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) after serving.

“I've been here ever since, just trying to get my education,” said Getz.

He also works in the college's veteran's services office, helping veterans get benefits they earned. He knows what vets go through to get back to school.

“I was worried, just like many of the veterans we have come in here. They're worried about how that transition will go.”

That transition is where BRCC comes in and it is why they have been named a military-friendly school.

“Veterans can still have that camaraderie of being with other veterans, and helping each other through it, which is a benefit, too.”

About 250 people at the campus have already benefited from the G.I. Bill this year. That number includes any husbands, wives and children of the veterans, so they can get support, too.

Dr Bob Young works in college administration. He got to BRCC using the G.I. Bill that paid for his doctorate after serving in Vietnam. Now, he helps other students figure out what they want to do after they leave the army.

“The veterans here, I feel a strong attachment to them and want to see them get the education they need after they've left service,” said Young.

That includes people like Getz, who says he's thankful to help other veterans, just like someone helped him.

“It means a lot, because with the veterans that go here, I understand what they're going through. I understand the difficulties they might have,” said Getz.

Some students at BRCC are on reserve from the military. Mary Baldwin College is the other college to make the list of military-friendly schools in the Valley.
