USPS Cutting Hours at Rockingham Post Offices

The U.S. Postal Service is thinking about shortening the hours for a few post offices.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- The U.S. Postal Service is thinking about shortening the hours for few post offices.

When people living in Criders showed up to their post office Tuesday, they were given pamphlets with information on how much the building is actually being used. It's not the only place in the valley that's being visited. The USPS was also at the Fulks Run office Tuesday.

The postal service is proposing keeping the Criders office open only two hours a day during the week. They're proposing four hours for Fulks Run.

"I think the biggest misconception from the customers is that they think the post office is being closed," shared David Schenck with the USPS.

Fortunately, neither of these offices are closing; they're just paying someone to work here for fewer hours.

It's all because the postal service has seen a dramatic drop in the number of people going to rural post offices like Criders for business. Even so, people living here are glad the office isn't closing.

"This serves customers from the top of the Shenandoah Mountain and surrounding areas. It's important to the entire community," shared Everett May Jr. who has lived in Criders all his life.

"A lot of farmers and people at different times of day have to come up here. They can't always be here during the hours that they want to set up for. Very seldom you come up here in the morning or in the evening there aren't people in here doing business and mailing packages and things like that," added Jack Spitler, who uses the Fulks Run office.

Like the others living here, they'll find out in about a week what hours this office will be open going forward.

The next meeting with the supervisors is scheduled for Thursday in Singers Glen at 3:30 p.m. Then, on Friday at 4 p.m. they'll visit the West Augusta office for another public meeting about the same issue.
