CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Unemployment in West Virginia rose slightly in May.

WorkForce West Virginia says May's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.3 percent. That's up three-tenths of a percentage point from April.

The national unemployment rate also was 6.3 percent.

The number of unemployed West Virginians increased by 2,600 to 51,100.

Employment gains were recorded in mining and logging, manufacturing, government, leisure and hospitality, educational and health services, professional and business services, and other services. They were offset by declines in trade, transportation and utilities, financial activities and information.

WorkForce West Virginia says nearly all of the 10,300 government jobs that were gained were poll workers for the May primary election.
