AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A nearly 100-year-old bridge in Augusta County has seen its last car.

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed the bridge over Elk Run near Churchville after inspecting it this week.

The single-lane truss bridge was built in 1920 and has reached the end of its service life.

Drivers on Moffett Branch Road will now be detoured until the bridge is replaced.

"I just wish they'd get it fixed as soon as possible so I don't have to make a detour around. I have to stay closer to home. Of course, I'm retired, and I don't have to go out as often as I used to," said James Green, who lives near the bridge.

VDOT said a temporary replacement should open the road back up in April and they'll start building a permanent replacement next year.
