The Virginia Railway Express is holding public hearings next month on a proposed 4 percent fare increase.
Hearings are set for March 7 in Stafford and March 27 in Fredericksburg to discuss the possible rate hike for the commuter rail service.
Officials say the increase would be used to offset increases in costs, including fuel and track access fees, as well as facilities maintenance.
According to the VRE, the proposed fare increase could add an estimated $1.4 million in annual revenue.
If approved, the increase would take effect in July. The fare increase would come on the heels of a 3 percent hike that went into effect last July.
