RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Educators in Virginia are partnering to help students with disabilities succeed after they leave school.

The Center on Transition Innovations is a collaboration between the Virginia Department of Education and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Officials say it will serve as a statewide resource to support school divisions, service providers, students with disabilities and their families.

The center was funded through a $2 million special education and student services start-up grant from the state education department.

Officials will help identify career goals, encourage skill building so individuals can live as independently as possible and increase postsecondary employment, education and training opportunities.
