RICHMOND According to AAA, in just 10 days, retail gas prices in Virginia should begin to drop by about 6 cents per gallon with the implementation of Governor Bob McDonnell's transportation funding plan. With that plan, the commonwealth's retail gas tax will be replaced with a lower tax at the wholesale level. The Virginia Petroleum, Convenience and Grocery Association (VPCGA) estimates Virginia drivers will spend 11.7 cents in taxes and fees for a gallon of gas through the end of the year.
AAA reports this change could make Virginia one of the five cheapest states in the US to buy gas.
These changes could mean customers will pay more when they buy thing because the sales tax will increase by 3 percent, making it 5.3 percent.
