RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power has won state approval to buy electricity from customer-owned solar installations.

The decision by the State Corporation Commission will allow homeowners and small businesses to sell solar-generated electricity to Dominion for five years, and to buy all their electricity from the utility. Dominion will buy up 3 megawatts of electricity when its Solar Purchase Program is fully running.

Dominion customer solutions and new technology manager Dianne Corsello tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/10aCBsD ) that the program will encourage more solar generation across Virginia.

Corsello says Dominion will pay 15 cents a kilowatt hour for solar-generated electricity. Customers will buy all their electricity from Dominion at an average price of 10.5 cents per kilowatt hour.

Corsello says applications will be taken beginning June 20.
