SHENANDOAH VALLEY -- Two counties and one city in the Valley rank among the healthiest areas to live in Virginia, according to a study by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.

Rockingham County was ranked as the 20th healthiest county, the city of Harrisonburg ranked 14th and Augusta County ranked 31st. The rankings are out of 131 localities in Virginia.

Kathy McQuain, Rockingham County's director of recreation, said county programs and staying fit can contribute to keeping people healthy.

"It's extremely important for longevity and healthy community and healthy families. We try to offer programs that encourage that, because it's a benefit all the way around," said McQuain.

The survey was compiled using information on access to health care facilities, public policy and the environment, factors that affect community health.
