STAUNTON, Va.(WHSV) -- The deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act is quickly approaching.
Certified application counselors with the Valley Community Services Board said they have seen a 34 percent increase from February to March.
They expect this trend to continue as people sign up using the health care website.
Jennifer Johnson, the director of outpatient and psychiatric services at Valley Community Services Board, said application counselors have been busy with phone calls over the past week and they expect this to continue over the next week.
To prepare for this increase to come, they have trained more employees to be certified application counselors.
They said, it is important for people to get their application done as quickly as possible and be prepared to make their first payment.
"It is a complicated issue and I think it is something easy to put off figuring out whether it is something I would qualify for or not. And, each month goes by and now we are coming up to the deadline and I have to figure it out or I am going to have to wait until November," said Johnson.
Johnson said even though the deadline is March 31, you can still sign up or make adjustments after that date if you have a life changing event.
For example, a divorce, death in the family or loss of a job.
