NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Jurors have sided with a Virginia sheriff who ordered strip searches of nine female jail contract workers as part of a drug-smuggling investigation.

The verdict was reached Wednesday in federal court in Norfolk, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

The workers alleged that Portsmouth Sheriff Bill Watson ordered deputies to perform visual body-cavity searches of all contract workers entering the jail in April 2011.

The workers accused the sheriff and several deputies of violating their constitutional rights by ordering the strip searches in April 2011.
