STAUNTON -- A group of veterans in Augusta County is celebrating the freedom for which they fought.

VFW Post 2216 presented the colors at America's Birthday Celebration in Staunton.

The post is led by Commander Mac McCauley, a 20-year Navy veteran who served three tours in Vietnam. McCauley said our freedoms make this country a special place - and it needs to be celebrated.

"Even more and more," he said, "as we look to the world crises that we're looking at, and looking across the world at all the things that are going on, that we are able to be here and to be free and to do the things we do.... So many places in the world you are not able to do that.

"It has for many, many years - hundreds of years - been a celebration that means something to a lot of people who have been in the service. It means a lot to the families who have lost veterans in the service. And it means a lot to those families who have veterans here with them," McCauley said.

McCauley also said that after recent U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is even more important to celebrate our freedom every day.
