Violence in One Neighborhood is Causing a Family to Move

A fight broke out in Harrisonburg, and now police are trying to figure out if it was gang related. The violence in the area is actually causing one family to move.

"I'm moving soon just because of all the noise, and there's cops all the time, and it's just getting really old," said one neighbor Crystal Miller

Crystal Miller feels very frustrated with this area. Trash fills her backyard, and she said there's always noise and violence. That's why she doesn't let her kids play outside, and her son said it's annoying.

"We don't get to come out much because of other kids playing rough and one time they were throwing rocks, large rocks near cars," said Miller's son.

Just yesterday a fight broke out at their apartment complex.

"I came out to get my son off the bus and saw the police were everywhere, and I just made sure the kids hurried up and got in the house," said Miller.

The fight broke out yesterday right next to the University Place Apartment Complex and on the other side, there's a nursing home. Harrisonburg police came to break it up, and they said there were about twenty people there. Now, they're looking into whether or not it's gang related.

"From our training and experience, we know when a lot of times they're doing beat-ins or when they're doing different types of activities with gangs. That is a method that they use as far as larger gatherings, so we're looking into that," said Kurt Boshart with Harrisonburg Police.

Boshart said he sees more young people getting involved in gangs, and he said it's obvious by some of the graffiti around town.

"A lot of times these tags actually tell us a story, and they give us an idea as to what's actually going on in that neighborhood, and in that we may be able to thwart the crime process or do something there to prevent it."

Miller said she has seen tags around her neighborhood before, on their apartment sign, and she said it must be from a gang.

"I mean if they're going around painting their name all over stuff it kinda seems that way," said Miller.

Miller said she's not waiting for things to change, but she is already planning on moving out.

Harrisonburg police said parents should watch their kids and make sure they don't get involved in violent activity. If you see any suspicious activity in your area, call police.

Tuesday's fight is still under investigation.
