HARRISONBURG -- Governor McDonnell is naming this week "School and Campus Safety Week" in Virginia. The Governor will hold a safety event at Virginia Commonwealth University Wednesday, but campuses in the Valley are already acting.

The governor has also asked for December 13 to be used as a day of mourning for the victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Don Egle, Senior Director of Communications for James Madison University, said while they have taken several safety and student information measures recently, it is always important to keep a focus on safety.

"For the university, it's something that's very imbedded throughout our academic year and I'd like to think that every week is a campus safety focus week for us," said Egle.

James Madison University has hosted several events that focus on both on both on and off campus safety.

It is also finals week, and students will be returning home for the holidays after completing their classes.
