LYNCHBURG, VA Officials are pleading for the return of a bayonet snapped from the World War I memorial in Lynchburg.
The News and Advance says the vandalism of the Doughboy statue is the second incident to happen in many years.
The last time this occurred, the broken bayonet was found propped up by the statue. This time, city workers said they found no trace of the bayonet.
Lynchburg Museum Director Doug Harvey said if it cannot be tracked down, a replica will have to be made.
The bronze Doughboy is located at the foot of Monument Terrace. Its gaze has watched over many community events, including a weekly "Support Our Troops" rally held by local veterans.
The city relies on private donations to repair public statuary.
