Department of Agriculture Offers Workshop for Beginning Beekeepers

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is offering a workshop aimed at beginning beekeepers.

The first of two sessions is planned for Tuesday at the Virginia Tech Roanoke Center. The second will be June 1 at the Catawba Sustainability Center.

The workshops are intended to inform those who are interested in starting their own apiaries, for pleasure or profit. Sponsors note that the honeybee is the only insect that provides food for human consumption.

The instructor is Mark Chorba, who is known as the "bee whisperer of the Roanoke Valley."

The fee for the workshop is $100. Registration is open through the weekend at: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/beekeep/ or by contacting Josh Nease at jnease@vt.edu
