HARRISONBURG, Va. Virginia was recently ranked third in the United States for green buildings; specifically, in sustainable building design, construction and operation.

Erick Beck, the owner of Beck Builders, said there has been a huge increase in green buildings since moving to the area.

The state of Virginia recently adopted a new set of guideline for green homes called EarthCraft.

Harrisonburg saw its first EarthCraft green building in 2008 and now there is more than 60 certified homes.

Charles Hendricks, a local architect, said the economy has turned people to more affordable and sustainable options.

"Harrisonburg is really waking up to this concept and the industry s growing really fast as builders become more accustomed to the standard," said Hendricks.

He said, he expects the trend in green building to continue as the cost of electricity continues to rise and more people want to be energy efficient.
