STAUNTON, Va -- The race is on between Bob Goodlatte and Andy Schmookler to represent Virginia's 6th District in Congress.

Volunteers Katie Cathey and Anne Fitzgerald campaigned on election day for different candidates for congress. They both know members of Congress work closely with whomever is elected president.

Cathey supports candidate Andy Schmookler.

“Regardless of whoever wins, Congress has got to do their job and work together,” said Cathey. “I think it's incumbent on us as citizens to hold their feet to the fire and make them do what they're elected to do.”

Fitzgerald supports incumbent Bob Goodlatte.

“The thing is when you vote for your Congressional representatives, they're the ones dictating; they're the ones making the laws,” said Fitzgerald. “You need to have folks up there who have common sense, who believe in balanced budgets, which Bob Goodlatte does.”

Cathey said the Congressional race is just as important as the presidential election and she hopes the two parties can unite.

“That's what's tearing us apart as a nation. We don't need to be like that,” said Cathey. “As a nation, we've always pulled together and worked together.

Fitzgerald volunteered for her young children and also because she wants to end the country's debt and what she calls over-reaching government programs.

“Bob Goodlatte is a terrific man,” said Fitzgerald. “Bob Goodlatte really believes in fiscal responsibility. He's a true conservative. He realizes that government needs to be limited.”

Cathey said Schmookler is the best fit to represent Virginia.

“He's fresh, and he's got good ideas. He's absolutely honest. He tells the truth. He's not about game playing; he's about getting the job done,” said Cathey.

Goodlatte is the incumbent in this race. He has served 10 terms representing our part of Virginia. Both Schmookler and Goodlatte participated in debates earlier this year to campaign to represent Virginia.

In just a few hours we will likely know how successful the volunteering for both sides was. Stay clicked to WHSV.com for live election coverage.
