WV Powerball Winner Helps Out Local Emergency Responders

Berkeley County Powerball winner W. Randy Smith has spent about $1 million equipping police and fire departments with new trucks and other equipment.

The Hagerstown Herald-Mail reported Friday that Smith spent $240,000 for four-wheel-drive pickups, snowplows and snowblowers for six Berkeley County fire departments.

Smith also bought four-wheel-drive ambulances for the Hedgesville and Baker Heights fire departments for $280,000.

Smith says he plunked down $220,000 for an armored personnel carrier for SWAT teams in Berkeley County, though it can be used around the state.

The West Virginia State Police in Martinsburg, meanwhile, get a $150,000 crime scene evidence vehicle and he's giving Martinsburg police a live-scan fingerprinting system and upgrades to its firing range for $100,000.

Smith won a $79 million Powerball last August and netted about $30 million.
