W.Va. US Senator Wants to Quicken Afghanistan Exit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is seeking a faster exit of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

The Democrat from West Virginia spoke on the Senate floor Thursday, helping lead efforts to pass a resolution to end the war in Afghanistan by 2014.

President Barack Obama plans to reduce troop strength until U.S. forces are home by the end of 2014.

The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/11oDBvW) reports that Manchin wants troops to return home at a faster pace, provided their security isn't jeopardized.

Manchin noted that the war has already surpassed the Vietnam War as the longest in U.S. history.
