JMU is being referenced in a new bill aimed at preventing sexual assaults on college campuses.

RICHMOND, Va. (WHSV)-- Senator Warner (D-VA), is teaming up with seven lawmakers to tackle the controversial subject of sexual assault.

The bill will make it mandatory for colleges and universities to provide services like counselors to help victims in sexual assault cases.

It will also put stronger sanctions in place for colleges that fall short of providing that assistance; or those that ignore it all together.

As a father of three daughters, Warner feels strongly about the bill.

"We are doing a disservice to the women of America today if we allow this type of activity to take place when statistics show that you have a better chance of being sexually assaulted if you go to college than you do if you don't go to college," said Sen. Warner.

JMU was mentioned as a place they would work to make sure colleges take this issue seriously.
