Augusta County Man Arrested After Home Break-ins

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A scary Monday morning for neighbors this week along Old Greenville Road and McPheeters Road.

Deputies said Devin Mergenthaler, 30, broke into three houses on these roads before being arrested.

They said two women caught him in their home on McPheeters Road. Mergenthaler said he was a private investigator; however, they were suspicious of him.

Shortly after being discovered, deputies said Mergenthaler assaulted the two women. One ended up with a concussion and needing stitches.

When law enforcement arrived Mergenthaler ran away, but officers ended up catching him.

"It is scary. We're locking doors and locking windows. You don't normally think about what you have to do to protect yourself but we were thinking about it yesterday," said Mary Alford, who lives on Old Greenville Road.

Mergenthaler is now in jail facing eleven charges.
