Virginia State Police said a Waynesboro man died in a car accident Saturday afternoon after trying to elude a Culpeper deputy.
Sgt. Les Tyler, a spokesperson with VSP, said James L. Francis, 31, died at the scene after being ejected from his car.
Tyler said Francis was heading northbound in a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta on Stevensburg Road.
A Culpeper deputy saw the VW traveling at an excess speed and attempted to pull the car over.
Tyler said Francis lost control of his car as he turned around a corner. The car slammed into a tree before overturning.
Tyler said Francis died on the scene near Stevensburg Road and Mount Dumpling Road.
Francis was not wearing a seatbelt.
The accident is under investigation.
