WAYNESBORO, Va -- Ladonna Mawyer is just one of many people at the Best Western in Waynesboro looking to make a difference for hundreds of people in Waynesboro.
"Honestly, I've never felt so a part of something so big," says Mawyer.
It's all a part of the Waynesboro YMCA Spring Gala. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year to raise money to help low income families afford membership.
A wide range of items are up for bid at Friday's fundraiser including an autographed UVA basketball from the 2014 season. On top of that, there is a live auction, horse race, and music.
One of the issues this event could end up tackling is obesity. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, childhood obesity is one the rise in the United States and Waynesboro isn't out of that picture.
"Right now in Waynesboro Public Schools area third graders have a higher obesity average than the statewide averages we're almost at a 70% free and reduced lunch population. Waynesboro's kids are getting poorer and fatter and the YMCA is the front-line to serve those children and families," says Jeff Fife, who is the Executive Director of the Waynesboro YMCA.
Gary Taylor has been a member of the YMCA for over 20 years, says he knows people who will benefit from this fundraiser.
"I think it could help the families out, give them things they don't have, that other people don't have," Taylor.
The YMCA is expecting to raise around $50,000 dollars from this event which could eventually help 500 people.
