AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va.---The Virginia Department of Transportation postponed the emergency work on Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain due to weather.

The project started on April 22, but has not been finished due to weather conditions.

VDOT Communication Manager with the Culpeper division Lou Hatter said the rain and fog can lead to slippery conditions.

Crews will remove unstable soil from Afton mountain again on Wednesday, if the weather allows it.

Hatter said on a day they have been able to work four to five hours.

He said this could be dangerous for workers.

"If the equipment is slipping in the dirt, then potentially the equipment could slide and there could be a significant accident, involving equipment and personnel," said Hatter.

He said it is possible the work extends to next week.
