HARRISONBURG -- Police officers said a fight between two men at Royal Gas Station off East Market Street escalated into a dangerous situation Thursday night. Now the suspect in the case, Andrew Spitzer, is charged with attempted first degree murder.

A witness said Spitzer hit Melvin Campbell with his car on purpose and then dragged him for several feet after the two got into a fight. Campbell is in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center right now.

Julie Campbell, Melvin Campbell's wife, said he was working on a younger woman's car before he was attacked. She says he did not know his attacker and wants to know why this happened.

"I just don't understand how, how and why? Because he has two daughters. I just don't understand how you could do that to someone who has children. How could you do that to anybody? I mean it's terrible. He has no heart,” said Julie Campbell.

Blake Zatarian, another witness, who was working at this gas station when this all happened, told WHSV what he saw.

"A customer's daughter ran in here and said she heard a bunch of screaming and yelling in the back. Well I ran outside to see what was going on and when I ran out there I saw a guy covered in blood, a lady holding his head up, and a car door a few feet away from there,” said Zatarian.

Spitzer was supposed to be in court Friday, but his case was continued until May. He faces charges of attempted first degree murder and malicious wounding.
