Woman Charged with Felony Embezzlement

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) -- The Waynesboro Police Department has arrested a Waynesboro woman on embezzlement charges stemming from a five-day stealing spree last spring when, according to police, she stole over $12,000 from her employer.

Officers arrested Ellen Jan-nel Smith, 31, on four counts of felony embezzlement, Feb. 6.

In late May 2013, senior managers from Fast Auto Loans, located at 1220 W Broad Street in Waynesboro, reported that Smith, who was then the store manager, could not account for four days of deposits.

When confronted with the issue of the missing money by her superiors, Smith resigned from her position.

She had been employed there for a couple of years.

The investigation continued for several months before the warrants were obtained.

Smith is currently free on bond.
