HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- While snow day may be great for kids, some are losing work hours they need to pay the bills.
Kenneth Douglas flipped channels rather than sandwich Monday as his employer remained closed Monday due to the snow.
Douglas works at Grilled Cheese Mania in Harrisonburg and is paid hourly.
Due to the snow, he has lost a lot of hours this winter.
Working a full five day week, he said one day without pay makes a big difference.
"It's 20 percent of your pay gone if you get the snow day. So that makes it that much harder to keep up on bills, or maybe doing something extracurricular like going on vacation or taking a trip. I'm going down to the Maple Festival next week, but now I don't know if I should because now I don't have the disposable income for it," said Douglas.
Douglas also said his boss, Kathleen Mania-Casey, does try to make up for the lost time as best she can.
Mania-Casey did tell us that she hate when Grilled Cheese Mania has to close because she knows everyone depends on their pay checks; however, more than a paycheck, safety must always come first.
She also said that she does her best to offer her coworkers opportunities to put some hours working on the company's newsletter or handbook as well as marketing or networking for us in the comfort of their home on days when we need to be closed.
