HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- On Jul. 30, Johnnie Williams testified that he gave McDonnell and his wife money because it was a business relationship, not a friendship. Williams testified under immunity from prosecution. He is the former CEO of Star Scientific, a dietary supplement company. He told the jury the McDonnells were nearly bankrupt when they asked him for help.
Williams denies having any sort of personal relationship with the McDonnell's, specifically the governor, saying ,quote, he's a politician and I'm a business man.
Prosecutors say Williams gave the McDonnells over $165,000 in secret gifts, cash, and loans in exchange for promoting his dietary supplement product. Williams will take the stand on Jul. 31.
Political analyst Doctor Bob Roberts has many thoughts on this trial. He says this trial is a credibility issue, with a lot of focus on Johnny Williams.
"Because they were ripping him apart on the grounds that you can't believe him. He lied this time, he lied this time. Well, how can you believe anything he says? Therefore he was going to tell the government anything that he could to get them to give them the deal so this way he doesn't go away to jail for 15 to 20 years for securities fraud," said Dr. Roberts.
Dr. Roberts stresses that this will be a credibility issue, and this includes the former Governor Bob McDonnell with him explaining why he hid everything.
Williams told the prosecutor today that he did not consider his relationship with McDonnell to be a friendship. He said that 'this was a business relationship'.
