Flooded Roads Cause Shenandoah Co. Schools to Close

Heavy rains from Wednesday night forced all public schools to close for the day on Thursday in Shenandoah County.

By Thursday afternoon some roads were still underwater, which forced drivers to take alternate roads.

Despite the concerns on the roads, rescue crews said it was a quiet morning on the flooded routes.

School bus drivers were told to stay at home and not put children in danger early in the morning.

Daniel Gray Drive was one of the hardest hit areas. A small river was flowing over it on Thursday morning and safety barriers blocked it off from any drivers trying to pass.

It was a similar story on several roads up and down Shenandoah County.

Luckily, it only was causing an inconvenience.

Water levels were also much higher at bridges throughout Mount Jackson during the day .

However, traffic was not delayed and there were no reports of any bridges having to close.

Clark Draper, who serves as Town Manager for Mount Jackson, said even though the weather hampered some plans on Thursday, things were clearing up.

"We'll put up barricades and try to let folks know that while it may look safe, its not," he explained. "The ground is really saturated and water is still coming up. If the sun stays out and it stays dry today(Thursday), the water levels will go down and we'll be able to return to normal tomorrow."

Despite the day off for schools, Superintendent Keith Rowland said he doesn't expect flooding to be an issue for Friday.
