James Madison junior Drew Dudzik now has a screw in his broken left foot.

The quarterback had surgery on the foot Monday afternoon.

Dudzik had been playing with a stress fracture in the foot all season. He broke the foot completely in Saturday's loss at home to No. 1 Richmond.

With Dudzik expected to miss at least the remainder of the regular season, coach Mickey Matthews says Kavon Seaton is now the Dukes' backup behind starting quarterback Justin Thorpe.

The team had been redshirting Seaton, a true freshman from California.

"I think he was like all freshmen," Matthews said Monday at his press conference. "I think all freshmen are bewildered. Some are more bewildered than others."

"He seems to be adjusting," he added. "We've just got to get him ready. He's what we got."

Matthews said his team doesn't currently have a third quarterback.

"If Kerby Long had not broken his hand, we would work Kerby a ton in there too," said Matthews. "I knew when Kerby went down that was really going to affect us this year, and it's going to hurt us for a while. That was a huge loss when we lost him."

Long broke his hand in practice the week prior to JMU's win at Liberty.

Matthews mentioned punter Matt Goff and walk-on freshman Chad Byers as possible scout-team quarterbacks in practice. He said it was unlikely the team would move freshman Dae'Quan Scott from receiver to quarterback.

Scott is currently redshirting at receiver. He ran for 35 touchdowns and threw for eight last season as a senior at R.E. Lee in Staunton.
