Suspect Pleads Not Guilty through Silence

James Whittlesey had his first appearance Monday in federal court for his arraignment.

Prosecutors said Whittlesey robbed the United Bank in Winchester in October, then escaped to Canada. That is where federal agents found and arrested him.

Whittlesey is charged with bank robbery, carrying a gun and having a weapon as a convicted felon.

The judge asked him several questions to make sure he understood his charges but Whittlesey refused to respond to anything.

His trial is set for July 23.
