Police Say Scam Involving Post Office Spreads in Staunton

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.

A scam sent under the guise of the U.S. Postal Service could harm your computer.

Staunton Police want you to know all the facts to make sure you are not a victim.

At least two people in Staunton have already opened the scam.

It's a fake e-mail from USPS customer service about shipment status. The scam wants your money, but also leaves a virus on your computer.

Police say if you're questioning an email, it is best to not open it.

Staunton Police Department reports there is a new scam going around the community involving an alleged shipment from USPS.

According to police, a citizen received an e-mail from “USPS Customer Service” regarding a USPS shipment status with a number attached.

It said the following:
Postal Notification,



Courier service couldn’t make the delivery of your parcel. Status deny/its not right specified size and weight of parcel.



Location of your parcel: Brownsville



Delivery status: sorting



Service: express mail



Item number: U3185 (etc)



Features: yes



Postal label is enclosed to the letter.



You should print the label and show it in the nearest post office to get a parcel.



Attention!

If the parcel isn’t received within 30 working days our company will have the right to claim compensation from you for it’s keeping in the amount of $12.12 for each day of keeping of it.

Police say this is a fraudlent e-mail and you should not open it. If you have already opened it, take a copy to the U.S. Post Office and ask to speak to a postal inspector.
