Valley Boys and Girls Club Holds Fundraiser for Children

The Boys and Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County hopes to have an impact on the Valley's children this year.

The non-profit organization held its largest fundraiser of the year Saturday night.

Club Director Bill Carter works hard for the fundraiser.

"We're just very appreciative of the community support we're getting right now," Carter said. "We feel like we're making a great turn, and we're just really excited about what this night will bring."

Board of Directors member Andy Huggins said the club has had less money to work with since the recession started.

That's why he said fundraisers help keep programs going.

"It's really nice for the community to come out and support the kids in our community who need us most," Huggins said. "There are a lot of wonderful organizations in our community and a lot of great places you can invest your money. Of course, we feel there's no greater investment than in our kids."

Supporters hope to raise about $100,000 for the community's children on Saturday.

Part of that money is raised through an auction and will go toward the club's programs like fighting obesity and encouraging community service.

Carter said those types of programs can inspire children and change their lives.

"That's what we do every day," Carter said. "The people that comes here and support this, they already know what good work we do in the community. So, like I said, it's just an opportunity for them to come here, celebrate with us, because we're all one community."
