W.Va. Board to Address Suicide Prevention Training

Posted: 7:48 PM Jun 13, 2012

A man whose teenage son committed suicide says he doubts a new West Virginia law on educator training could have done anything to help his son.

The state Board of Education ran out of time Wednesday to address implementing guidelines for the law that was signed in March. The board likely will take up the issue Thursday.

It aims to make sure that educators are trained to recognize the warning signs of suicide and reach out to students in crisis.

Buckhannon-Upshur High School student Eston William Nelson II committed suicide in November. His father, Bill Nelson, says his son had been bullied.

Bill Nelson says the law mandates the training. But he believes tougher discipline is needed for bullies. Current state code calls for up to a 10-day suspension.
