W.Va. Jobless Rate Rises to 7.4 Percent

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose four-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent in July.

Workforce West Virginia said Tuesday that total employment fell 500. A loss of 800 jobs in the service-providing sector offset a gain of 300 in the goods-producing sector.

Within the goods-producing sector, construction jobs rose 900, while manufacturing fell 400, and mining and logging declined 200.

Gains of 700 jobs in educational and health services and 100 in financial activities occurred within the service-providing sector. There were losses of 700 in trade, transportation, and utilities, 300 in government, 200 in other services, and 100 in leisure and hospitality.

The national unemployment rate rose slightly to 8.3 percent last month.

The state's unadjusted jobless rate fell one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.2 percent.
