Northend Greenway Receives Grant, Harrisonburg Closer to Having Biking and Walking Trail

Harrisonburg is getting closer to having a paved walking and biking trail throughout the city.

The Northend Greenway just received a grant of $11,000 to move the project forward.

MillionMile Greenway, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, is awarding the grant.

The Northend Greenway will be a 2.5 mile trail that will connect you to places like Court Square, Eastern Mennonite University and Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

The grant is a combination of cash and in-kind services from experts in marketing and technical planning.

The cash will be used for more signs and maps to give people a better idea of where the route is located.

The trail will connect downtown businesses and residents with the north end of the city.

Suzi Carter with the Northend Greenway said some parts of it will run through include the area by Liberty and Southern States, EMU at 42 and Mount Clinton Pike, and between Dollar General and Kline's Dairy Bar.

"It's really a testament that the Northend Greenway is a successful project already. While we're developing our additional fundraising materials and support, there's already huge support across our community from individuals, non-profit organizations, civic groups and businesses. So we know that by coming together, we're making this project a reality," said Carter.

Ground-breaking for the trail construction will be late summer or early fall of 2013, once 75 percent of the funding is raised for the $1.3 million project.

Carter said the Northend Greenway is looking now to raise $250 thousand.
