Augusta Health Prepares Students for Medical Careers
If your kids plan on being doctors or nurses when they grow up, it's never too early for them to start.
Augusta Health is holding its second annual camp for middle schoolers who are thinking about careers in the medical field.
Camp organizers said as time goes on, we are going to need more health care providers in the country.
This is their way of getting more qualified, young people thinking about entering the field.
Augusta Health is expecting around 18 students to tour the hospital and go into some areas most people don't get to see.
They will also learn how to inject an object with a syringe, take blood pressure, do a glucose screening and perform CPR.
Linda Gail Johnson with Augusta Health has some advice for any student interested in a health career - concentrate on your math and science skills.
She said the camp shows students a variety of health careers to look into, which could be some they would not have thought of in the first place.
"I think what we learned last year at the first camp is that the students came away with a better understanding of some of the other careers. One of the students last year left saying 'You know, I think I would really like physical therapy.' And another one was really intrigued with the radiology department and X-rays," she said.
The camp is full for the summer, but organizers said it will run again next summer.
They encourage students to talk to their guidance counselors if they are interested in health careers, and they will be steered in the right direction.
