VDOT Working Hard to Stay Ahead of Storm

VDOT was busy Wednesday morning dispatching crews to keep roadways clear ahead of a snowstorm moving into the Shenandoah Valley.

Plows and trucks were lined up at the VDOT Harrisonburg Residency early, getting filled with salt and sent out to monitor the roadways.

Resident Engineer Don Komara says crews were out early and will remain out during the duration of the storm.

Snow falling during the daytime can pose extra challenges to crews clearing roadways, especially trying to contend with extra cars on the roads.

However, this snowfall didn't start until after the morning commute was over, something Komara is thankful about.

"One thing that is good is that most of the people have gotten to work when it starts, so hopefully we'll have it in hand and everything treated and they'll just run through some wet areas and some slushy stuff on their commute home," Komara explained.

Crews will also be out during the overnight hours when temperatures drop, to check conditions and watch for dangerous conditions like black ice.

"We'll have people deployed tonight to catch those icy spots and the bridges and that and I would just tell people that if they are going to travel to do it earlier in the evening and later at night," Komara said.

For the latest conditions and any school delays or closings, be sure to tune in to WHSV's Daybreak Thursday morning starting at 5 a.m.
