Two Va. Companies Announce Layoffs; One Adding Jobs

Two companies in Virginia are announcing cuts and closings that will result in job losses.

American Woodmark Corp. says it is reducing production capacity and making other cost savings moves because of the continuing housing slump. The Winchester, Va.-based cabinetmaker says it is closing a component facility in Hardy County, W.Va., and a lumber operation in Hazard, Ky.

It also will put an Oklahoma assembly plant it idled in early 2009 up for sale and is making changes to its employee benefits programs.

The company says once all actions have been completed, it expects to realize ongoing annual cost savings of about $16.5 million to $18.5 million. It says the remaining manufacturing facilities will be more efficient and can increase production by about 50 percent without investing significant capital investment.

Also, Pitney Bowes is closing a call center in Chesapeake, leading to the layoff of 64 workers.

A spokesman for the company told The Virginian-Pilot that the center will close in June. The company says the layoffs will come in three waves, with the first starting in February.

The closure won't affect other local sales and service offices.

But there is some good news. Amthor International plans to expand its plant in Gretna and add 50 jobs.

Media outlets report that company and local officials announced the expansion Tuesday. The plant manufactures tanks for trucks, including deliver vehicles and fire department pump trucks. It opened in 1992 and currently employs about 60 full-time workers.
