Va Program Makes Telephone Service More Affordable

A Virginia program is helping low-income residents stay connected.

The State Corporation Commission says the Lifeline program makes basic wireline telephone service more affordable to those who need it.

The Lifeline program in Virginia has been in existence since 1988. Those who qualify are entitled to receive a minimum basic telephone service discount of $9.25 per month.

Regulators say access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to all Virginians.

The SCC is partnering with federal officials and other groups to increase awareness about telephone service assistance programs and expand the number of qualified participants. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
